The Quarter Life Crisis: Taking Life One Day at a Time

The thing is, we don't have to be who others want us to be. We don't need others to tell us what to do, because hell no, our lives are not theirs to control. We're critical individuals who know what we want, maybe not now, but we'll find a way.

Millennials are often thought to be more dynamic and abreast than their Gen X counterparts. We, Gen Y-ers, move a lot, we feel the constant need for communication and the audacity to get things done, ASAP. We're impatient, happy go lucky and too unfocused. So, what then happens after graduation? We're grid-locked to the lifestyle we're used to have, and stuck to a routine that devoid us of growing. Sometimes, we may think we have everything, but deep inside there's always something missing --- the resounding emptiness as we search for the true meaning of life.

The result of all these carefreeness is our inability to become independent and responsible with the choices we make. Far too many times, we cringe at the sound of our parents pushing us out of the house in search for employment; we're confused as to what career we want, and worst of all, we're lost at what we want out of life. We live in constant fear not knowing what tomorrow brings. We're confused as to what we want, that we always drown ourselves in endless worries and what ifs. We stress ourselves with the future, only to realize that there are more important things than whining about what we don't have. We fill ourselves with issues on insecurity and well-being, that we ignore the people we currently have. We pin ourselves down with endless banters on whether or not to find a new job, to do the things we love whilst earning enough to support ourselves. Worst of all, we question ourselves what our purpose in life is.

The thing is, we don't have to be who others want us to be. We don't need others to tell us what to do, because hell no, our lives are not theirs to control. We're critical individuals who know what we want, maybe not now, but we'll find a way. We all have free will and instincts to decide on our own. Of all the people, we, ourselves, know what's good and bad for us. So don't let others control your life, it's yours and no one else's. Second, we focus on what we have, the people around us and the things we cling on to. Make them the focus of your life. Forget about what you don't have, because they won't matter; what matters most are the things you currently have, the greatest treasures no one can take away from you. Protect them. Finally, we don't stop ourselves from learning. We continue to tread on life and in the process, we learn a little more about ourselves. Our experiences shape the way we do things, the people around us continue to hone the way we think; and our mistakes teach us what we ought to be in the future.

At the end of the day, we don't owe others anything, but we owe ourselves the recognition for keeping ourselves sane and stable. So the next time you meet someone who is in a quarter life crisis, tell him/her that everything will be okay. Just take it one day at a time, take control, and everything else will fall into place.
