Honestly, it’s life changing is a regular series where we talk about the weird and wonderful possessions we can’t imagine life without. Think of it as an ode to the mundane, bizarre and, sometimes, wholly unnecessary products in our lives.
It’s one of life’s great conundrums: how do you get toast out of the toaster when it’s still deliciously hot, without burning your fingers?
But, dear readers, I have found the solution. Prepare to hear two words that’ll change everything: toast tongs.
The tongs are a simple tool made from bamboo that allow you to pluck your toast, crumpets, pittas and hot cross buns from the toaster with the confidence of a pro baker.
Better yet, the long reach of the tongs enables you to pick out any pesky bits of bread that have broken off and become wedged in the murky depths of the heated cage. Gone are those tiny fragments that slowly burn beneath, threatening to set the fire alarm off at any moment. Not only are my fingers safe, but my toaster has had a new lease of life.
Armed with this mighty instrument, you will never be tempted to risk life and limb by jabbing at your toaster with a knife again. Forget life-changing, these tongs could be life-saving.
The tongs come with a small magnet attached to the back designed to clip them to your toaster or fridge when they’re not in use, because once they are in your life you won’t want to risk losing them at the back of a drawer.
Admittedly, I wasn’t always a convert to the religion that is toast tonging. When my boyfriend gleefully announced ‘I’ve got a present you might like’ I thought he might be about to pull out a puppy or at least some flowers. So imagine my disappointment when he unveiled an implement that looked like it had been stolen from the picked egg jar at the chippy.
But I’m happy to admit I judged the tongs too soon. They’re so simple yet effective, I’m puzzled as to why they don’t come as standard with every toaster.
The only minor downside to the bamboo tong material is it can take a little scrubbing if covered if anything gloopy (note to self: toasting salted caramel and chocolate hot cross buns at Easter was probably a mistake). But for everyday crumbs, they require nothing more than a quick, occasional brush down and wipe.
If, like me, you have also seen the light when it comes to all things tong, the product is made by Lakeland and can be bought directly from the retailer at £2.49. Alternatively the tongs are also available to buy on Amazon for the slightly higher price of £5.79, if you want the convenience of throwing them in with your next big order.
Go forth and tong!
