NASA's Curiosity Rover has captured what might be one of its most stunning images yet: the sunset on Mars.

The incredible image was taken using Curiosity's Mast Camera inside the Gale crater. It's the first colour image of a Martian sunset that humans have seen and has been adjusted to be an accurate representation of what we would see in person.

NASA explains that due to the high quantities of dust in the Martian atmosphere, blue light is able to pass through the atmosphere far more efficiently than any of the other colours explaining why landscape is bathed in a dark blue hue.

Taken over a period of around seven minutes, Curiosity was able to capture a number of images documenting the sun's decent past the horizon.
