According to TMZ, prior to the actress filing divorce papers last week, she believed she was being followed by the church - which Tom is a devout member of - as she believed they viewed her as a threat to the organisation.

Eyewitnesses told the site they had seen several "mysterious" men and vehicles around Katie's apartment, which followed her while she was out.

A White Escalade and a Black Mercedes were reportedly seen on different corners of the street where Katie visited last week.

However, this report has now been fiercely denied, with Gary Soter, a lawyer for the Church, telling TMZ: "The Church of Scientology is not following Katie or conducting surveillance on her in the wake of her divorce with Tom Cruise."

Their daughter Suri is now the subject of a custody battle, and it has been suggested that Katie, who was brought up as a Catholic, became increasingly uncomfortable with Tom's views on how they should parent her within the Scientology church.
