Nasa has confirmed that they’re teaming up with Tom Cruise for a new film, which will be the first to be shot in space.
Earlier this week, Deadline reported that Tom and SpaceX – the space tech company owned by Elon Musk – were collaborating on a project which would see the actor boarding the International Space Station for filming.
Jim Bridestine, the administrator of Nasa, has now confirmed these plans are in place.
“NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station!” he tweeted.
Jim added: “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”
No plot details about the upcoming film have been released, although Deadline claimed that the project was not part of the Mission: Impossible saga.
Throughout his career, the 57-year-old actor has been renowned for his hands-on approach to filming his own stunts, including filming in zero-gravity for an aeroplane crash scene in The Mummy and clinging onto the side of a plane as it takes off in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.
However, this has not been without its pitfalls.
Back in 2017, Tom broke two bones in his ankle after an attempt to jump between two buildings went awry, leading production on the film to be briefly suspended.
Tom’s next project will be the much-awaited Top Gun sequel, co-starring Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly.
A seventh Mission: Impossible film was also in the works, though production on this was shut down earlier this year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
