Tom Maynard, a 23-year-old batsman for Surrey County Cricket Club, has been killed after he was hit by a tube train.

He was hit by a District Line train on the London Underground at Wimbledon Park station at 5.03am this morning, Press Association sources said, after earlier reports stated he had been killed in a car crash.

His death is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

The 23-year-old batted at number four for his county against Kent in their Twenty20 defeat at Beckenham only on Sunday. His father, Matthew Maynard, played for England in four Test matches.

He was expected to go on and represent England having played for the Lions squad last winter.

British Transport Police added "a file will be prepared for the Coroner", while Surrey have postponed Wednesday's T20 game against Hampshire at the Oval and the ECB have cancelled an England press conference at the ground today as a mark of respect.

Surrey said in a statement: "Our thoughts at this awful time are with Tom’s family and friends and all those that were close to him."

His club went on to hail an "incredible talent" with "unlimited" potential.

Surrey chairman Richard Thompson added: "Our thoughts at this awful time are with Tom's family and friends and all those that were close to him.

"Tom Maynard was a prodigiously talented young batsman who had made an incredible start to his career and was clearly destined for far greater things.

"The impact Tom made in such a short period of time for Surrey CCC spoke for itself.

"There is a profound sense of loss at the passing of Tom.

"To lose anybody at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy."

Born in Cardiff, Maynard played for the same county which his father served for 20 years, Glamorgan, before he signed a three-year deal to play for Surrey for the 2011 season.
