Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has lost his bid to become an independent member of the European Parliament.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, received 38,908 votes in the North West – around 2% of all those who voted there.

Yaxley-Lennon, 36, endured a backlash during campaigning in the region.

The former English Defence League leader was hit by milkshakes at least twice during walkabouts, and violence broke out at a rally where he appeared.

On Sunday evening, Yaxley-Lennon told media that restrictions on his social media profiles – such as Twitter and YouTube, where he is banned – had made it more difficult to challenge “lies and smears”.

“I think we have a massive fight, what we find out tonight is how much the influence of the establishment and the media and the limiting of social media,” he claimed.

Nick Lowles, of the anti-racism campaign Hope Not Hate, said: ”‘Tommy Robinson’ has suffered a humiliating defeat. Voters in the North West have seen through his lies and rejected his message of hate.”
