The summer festival season is upon us, with an estimated 14 million adults descending on fields and parks across the UK to enjoy some form of live music. However, being outdoors all day means that staying safe in the sun should also be in tune for festival goers.

Take a look at my tips below to ensure that your festival experience is fun in the sun and not an epic meltdown...

Preparation. Always apply sun cream in the morning whether the sun is out or not. When you're exposed to the elements all day it's easy to get burnt, so make sure have SPF protection. When applying suncream, do it before you get dressed so you don't miss anywhere, also if you decide to take a layer off, you'll still be covered. Pay attention to the less obvious areas, like your feet, ears and the back of your neck as they can be particularly painful if burnt. I recommended that you re-apply every two hours, so a small travel size tube for your pocket is ideal.

Take regular breaks. Give your skin some relief from the sun by taking regular breaks. Understandably, your tent may not be as comfy as your own bed, but the more rest the lesser chance of heat exhaustion. Alternatively, you could take a pop-up shade to shelter you and friends from the midday sun, while you enjoy a drink or bite to eat.

Hair. Hair is usually one thing that people forget about when they're in the sun. The suns rays can damage your hair as well as your skin; making the hair shaft weaker and more susceptible to breakages. There are now a number of hair protection products on the market to help prevent this. Calypso's Sun-Sea hair protection will hydrate your hair, provide protection and reduce colour fading, so you can enjoy the music without worrying about your luscious locks.

Sunburn. If you forget to apply your sun cream and sunburn, make sure that you stay out of the sun and if possible apply an after sun to help cool and soothe your skin and prevent blistering.

Dehydration. Dehydration is extremely common at festivals as many people choose to drink alcohol rather than water. There are many side effects including dry mouth, dry lips, clammy hands and feet, headaches and light-headedness. On average women should drink eight 200ml glasses and men should drink ten 200ml glasses of fluid per day. So, keep a bottle of water with you and alternate your drinks this will help to keep your body and your skin hydrated while still having fun.

Sunglasses: Combine style and protection with a pair of sunglasses! You can perfect that rock and roll look while protecting your eyes, with fashionable shades that include UV protection. They will work by protecting your eyes as well as the delicate skin around them, preventing fine lines and premature aging - so you'll be able to enjoy watching live music for many years to come!
