TV Tonight - Wednesday 4 December

Did you see the Managing Director of Liberty has caused ripples with the views he expressed in the fly-on-the-wall series which started this week? Read our review here...

Meanwhile, here are our picks of the evening's viewing...

Stop! Police Interceptors - Channel 5, 7pm

You know those high-speed chases in films that sometimes we have to watch through our fingers? These chaps do it for real. A collection of some of the most memorable moments in the daily rubber-and-burn grind of car police teams from Essex, South Yorkshire and Cumbria. It's enough to make you take the bus.

Lionel Bart - Reviewing The Situation - BBC4, 9pm

The story behind the mastermind who brought us tunes including 'From Russia With Love', Little White Bull' and 'Living Doll', and that's before we get to the enduring wonder of the 'Oliver!' soundtrack. 'Rollercoaster' is an overused term, but deserving in the case of Bart, the heir of a Cossack legacy, who went from his East End childhood to chinking glasses with the Beatles and Burt Bacharach.

28 Up South Africa - 10.35pm, ITV

We'll have to wait another five years or so for the next instalment of the British 7-Uppers, Michael Apted's stunning life-long documentary series following a group of ordinary folk, but this serves as a very meaningful stop-gap. The situation in South Africa has changed beyond recognition for some of the characters in this series but, as they all acknowledge, there's a long way to go. What they share with their British counterparts is a vitality, honesty and power of reflection that makes this a universally good watch.
