The 140 character limit on Twitter may be a thing of the past after reports that the company is pursuing a new product that allows users to post longer-form tweets.
Re/code says the company is tinkering with new ways of allowing people to be more verbose on the network.
While the character limit is a signature of the micro-blogging platform since its inception in 2009, it is also one of the site's more frustrating features.
The company is thought to be openly discussing removing URL links and other people's Twitter handles from the limit.
And it is now believed to be considering other ways to expand the character limit.
Interim CEO Jack Dorsey is said to have offered his personal endorsement to the plans.
“People have been very precious at Twitter about what Twitter can be and how much it can be evolved,” one current senior employee told Re/code. “Having Jack come in and say it’s okay makes all the difference in the world.”
Twitter has struggled to maintain active users in recent months as all-round social network Facebook continues to dominate.
Most recently Twitter said that it had 316m active users.
Facebook reached the historic milestone of over 1.49 billion active users earlier this year.
WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, has achieved 900m active users.
A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment.
