Two British people have been killed in a car crash in France shortly after arriving in the country. The Foreign Office confirmed the deaths, saying: "We are aware of the deaths of two British nationals in France on November 29 and we are ready to provide consular assistance."
According to the AFP agency, the couple's car was crushed between two large trucks after disembarking from a cross-channel ferry.
A spokeswoman for DFDS Seaways, which operates a service between Dover and Dunkirk, said: "We can confirm that a road traffic incident occurred in the port of Dunkirk on Friday 29 November and fatalities have been reported.
"Police are investigating the incident, which took place on the main road leading into the terminal. We are unable to comment on this whilst French police enquiries are taking place."
The spokeswoman could not confirm if the two British people had been passengers on a DFDS ferry.
