The deaths of 1,041 people in the UK following a positive coronavirus test have been confirmed in 24 hours.
Meanwhile, 62,322 more people were diagnosed with Covid on Tuesday, the government said.
It means 2,774,479 people have now tested positive since the pandemic began, with 77,346 dying with 28 days.
It is the highest daily figure since April 21, when 1,224 people died.
The figures are correct as of 5pm on Tuesday in England and Wales, and 9.30am on Wednesday in Northern Ireland and Scotland. However, the true number of deaths may be significantly different. Here’s a quick primer on how to make sense of the different totals that are released each day.
