The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by 739 in 24 hours.

It brings the total death count to 27,510 and includes people in hospitals as well as in care homes and the community who had tested positive for coronavirus.

It does not include people who died with suspected Covid-19 but who had not been tested, meaning the true number of deaths may be significantly higher. Here’s a quick primer on what the different numbers mean and how to understand them.

Of the 352 people who died in England, all but 18 had underlying health conditions. Seventy died yesterday, with the rest dying between March 16 and April 29. The victims were aged 30 to 103.

The figures cover the period up to 5pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, as of 9am on Friday, 177,454 people had tested positive for Covid-19, with 122,347 tests carried out on Thursday alone. It means the government has comfortably hit its self-imposed target of performing 100,000 daily tests by the end of April, despite a last-minute scramble that saw it barely over 50% just days ago.
