Foreign Secretary William Hague has confirmed that the UK has re-established a diplomatic mission in Libya.

The team, which will be led by the British ambassador to Egypt and former ambassador to Iraq Dominic Asquith, arrived in Tripoli on Monday.

In a statement Hague said that the diplomatic team will join a "small FCO-led advance party that deployed to Tripoli last week."

Hague said: "The arrival of this team marks another significant step in the UK's relations with the new Libya, and reflects the progress the NTC has made in improving security and stability on the ground.

"It will help strengthen relations with the NTC authorities and support their efforts to rebuild Libya. The team will also liaise with international organisations in order to help address humanitarian needs in Tripoli and the surrounding areas."
