The government has confirmed a further 1,564 Covid people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 – the highest number of UK deaths reported on a single day since the outbreak began.
The previous highest daily total, 1,325, was recorded just five days ago, with deaths in the second wave of the virus now surpassing those in the first wave.
In the most recent 24-hour recording window, 47,525 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK, with the rate per 100,000 residents over the last seven days now standing at 614.8.
Analysis by the PA news agency of separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate – together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days – suggest there have now been 100,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.
