Britain will finally bask in blue sunny skies after what had initially been a wet Bank Holiday and Notting Hill carnival.

Temperatures are expected to peak at 26C (78.8F) in parts of the south east, while the rest of England and Wales will enjoy highs of around 24C (75.2F).

While not quite the record-breaking heights reached last month, the warm weather will be a vast improvement for those who have endured a weekend of heavy showers.

The warm and dry weather is forecast to last throughout the week - good news for parents who are entertaining children in the final week of the summer holidays.

Chris Burton, a forecaster for the MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "It's going to be a pleasant day for everyone, very different to Saturday certainly.

"There will be some mist and cloud which will burn up this morning before giving way to temperatures of between 20 - 24 for most of England and Wales and up to 26 in the South East.

"It will be cooler in Northern Ireland and Scotland where the cloud will linger for longer, perhaps staying in the late teens.

"A pretty warm Bank Holiday Monday for most."

The clear skies will be particularly welcome in Essex today, which saw the worst of the torrential rain and flash floods.

Heavy flooding has caused major disruption in parts of the county over the weekend, with Essex Fire and Rescue answering more than 300 calls for help as the result of floods overnight.

More than three inches fell in Shoeburyness, while around one inch fell in London and across other parts of the east.
