The uncle of a teenage girl found stabbed to death has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Police were called to Hill Street in Toxteth, Liverpool, at 3.50pm on Saturday after being called by neighbours.

Police found a 19-year-old girl and her 60-year-old mother with stab wounds.

Both women were taken to hospital but the 19-year-old, named by police as Natalie O'Donoghue, was declared dead. Her mother, Violet Burns, is in a "critical but stable condition" in hospital, police said.

A Home Office post-mortem examination concluded that Miss O'Donoghue died as a result of blood loss following a single stab wound.

A 50-year-old man from Toxteth, understood to be Violet Burn's brother and Miss O'Donoghue's uncle, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and is being questioned by detectives.

Police said it is not yet clear what the motive was behind the attacks.

The scene remains sealed off and is being forensically examined by scenes of crime officers.

Neighbour Brenda Williams, 71, said she would play bingo with Mrs Burns and described the mother and daughter as "nice people".

She added: "It's awful. I can't believe it. I can't believe the young girl has died. Natalie was a lovely girl. She never bothered anybody. You used to see her come in with her girlfriends. She used to just stand on the path talking on her mobile. I used to say hi to her when I walked past."
