Should You Use Botox in Your 20's?

Should you use Botox in your 20's?

I believe the target audience for Botox has changed over the years, the younger generation are going under the needle now more than ever.

Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is applied medically to patients to treat certain muscular conditions. These range from muscular spasms and stiffness to nerve disorders. However, Botox can also be used to temporarily lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles, usually between 3 to 6 months.

It has been said that the perfect age to start using Botox is 25, on a cosmetic level. The argument that some dermatologists make is that by starting early, you are actually preventing wrinkles from occurring altogether; however, research for this theory is limited.

There is no concrete evidence that Botox can prevent wrinkles from ever forming, and many plastic surgeons do not agree on the benefits of starting young.

Brian Glatt, a plastic surgeon from the US, said, "Wrinkles wouldn't form as readily on a young person who's had treatments for years. In addition, if Botox is used regularly, the wrinkles that return when the Botox wears off may not be as severe".

Another plastic surgeon said, "A person who starts injections for wrinkle prevention in their 20s can spend up to £21,000 on Botox injections before real wrinkles show up in their 40s"

The side effects of Botox can also be an issue. At any age, Botox can cause problems with swallowing, speaking or breathing, with additional symptoms of botulism and muscle weakness.

I advise anyone thinking of undertaking Botox treatment to think carefully about these risks. If you're in your twenties, and considering turning to the needle, talk to a specialist and make an informed decision, don't jump straight in.

I believe it is down to a person's rate of ageing which determines when or if, they should consider Botox, as well as their lifestyle. Smoking, alcohol intake and exercise are all contributing factors.

I feel as a society we have to be more aware of the pressures that are tempting clients to have Botox in their 20's. Women who begin early can become addicted, causing a mental spiral which will become difficult to control. When used for improving appearance, a healthy balance is needed and no-one should ever see Botox as a proactive measure to simply 'feeling good'. Quite simply, when would you stop?

I continue to keep my reservations on an ethical level in the use of Botox on clients in their 20s.

I feel more can be done for the youth of today in natural alternatives, such as sun protection, as well as more increased exercise and healthier lifestyles.

Remember, true beauty comes from within and not from your next Botox appointment.
