Finding an off-the-rack Halloween costume that is inspiring rather than borderline offensive is tricky enough (no more "sexy" skeletons, please), but US retail giant Walmart has made it that much harder for women in search of a last-minute costume choice when an unfortunately named "fat girl costumes" subsection was discovered on its website.
Customers took to Twitter to complain about the offensively labelled category, after Kristyn Washburn pointed out the issue on the social media site, posting: "@Walmart Not sure labeling these as "Fat Girl Costumes" is the best approach #rude."
Jezebel followed up with an article about the incident, noting that many of the outfits in the "Fat Girl Costumes" section also appeared in the Women's Plus Size Adult section.
"This never should have been on our site. It is unacceptable, and we apologise. We are working to remove it as soon as possible and ensure this never happens again," a Walmart spokesperson told The Huffington Post.
If you're still in the market for an offensive costume, there are still a few to be found on Walmart's website (Fat Tinkerbell, anyone?).
Just last month, Urban Outfitters was in hot water after an offensive "blood-soaked," massacre-inspired sweatshirt appeared on its website, while Primark has been under fire for using mannequins with protruding ribs and accused of exploitative labour practices after shoppers found hand-sewn "cry-for-help" labels in their garments.
Two words, Walmart: #retailfail.
