Weather: Britain Braced For Another Round Of High Winds

Britain Braced For Another Stormy Barrage

The UK is braced for another stormy battering as the strong winds that blighted the north on Thursday return over the weekend and continue into next week.

According to forecasters, gusts of up to 165mph were recorded in Scotland last week, forcing schools to close after "hurricane bawbag" felled power lines.

Some homes in Scotland remain without electricity, despite engineers working around the clock to fix the disruption.

Conditions for those without power have been worsened by a drop in temperatures, with Glasgow recording temperatures of -1.5C and some areas of the Highlands dropping as low as -7C.

On Saturday, the Met Office issued a warning for strong winds and rain for Sunday night and Monday, with England to bear the brunt.

Severe gales are being forecast for later in the week across southern Britain and Northern Ireland.

Aisling Creevey, a forecaster with Meteogroup, told the Press Association:

"It is very difficult to know at this stage where exactly the storms are going to be.

"There's a system coming through on Tuesday and again on Thursday - it looks as if they will be two stormy days. We could see gusts of 100mph in some places - but there is very little confidence about exactly where."
