Looking for a novel way to spend Halloween? West Midlands Police have just the thing.
The force has announced an overnight “ghost-hunting mission” in Birmingham’s now disused Victorian prison on Steelhouse Lane.
The lock-up has housed notorious killers such as Fred West and the (real) Peaky Blinders and for £75 you can wind down from your paranormal search by sleeping in the very cells that housed them.
West hanged himself in another prison in 1995 while awaiting trial for the murder of 12 women.
His wife Rose West was jailed later that year for the murder of 10 women and will spend the rest of her life in prison.
While some outlets have reported outrage at the use of West’s name to promote an event, most of the comments on social media are more upset over the price.
If £75 seems a bit steep, all money raised will go to modern slavery charity Hope for Justice UK.
In a statement, West Midlands Police said: "The Ghost Hunting Mission within the Victorian Lock Up in Birmingham city centre, run independently of West Midlands Police, is an event to raise money for modern slavery charity Hope for Justice.
"Steelhouse Lane is where Fred West was held in custody in the 90s and his name was used alongside the Peaky Blinders to promote this worthy cause.
"On reflection the organiser of the event has agreed that using his name was insensitive and has therefore removed it from any advertising of this event."
