Move over Hipster Barbie, there's a new parody Instagram account in town.
'White Savior Barbie' recreates cliché travel photos middle class twenty-somethings post while volunteering abroad.
You know, the ones where they grab the nearest child and takes a selfie while wearing a full face of makeup.
Those.
The account was created by two anonymous women who draw on their own experiences of volunteering in East Africa.
"We were never as ‘savioresque’ as Barbie Savior, but we did things back in our White Savior days that we regret," the creators told The Huffington Post via email.
"It really just started as a joke between us, a way to get some of these things off of our chest. Its hard to pinpoint the irony at times in real life... the wildly self-centred person veiled as the self-sacrificing saint."
The account, which was only created five weeks ago, has already gained more than 20,000 followers.
Its deception includes the phrase: "It's not about me...but it kind of is."
While there is obviously nothing wrong with volunteering your time to help others, the account serves to highlight the ridiculousness of people who purely see volunteering as one big photo op.
“If you’re offended by the account then you’d better be offended by the real accounts who actually display this behaviour in all authenticity. That is the real offence," the makers said.
