My amazing son who I'll call J, is nearly three, and was diagnosed soon after birth with a relatively rare genetic condition. We don't yet know how it will affect him as he grows older, but so far he has battled an array of medical problems. One thing's for sure, our little family's life will never be 'normal'...
This might be a controversial post, but it's something which, as the mother of a child with a genetic difference, I feel strongly about.
Because of J's condition, we have been to quite a few special needs playgroups where I've met dozens of other parents whose children, like J, have some sort of genetic 'mutation'. J's is a relatively rare one, but the vast majority of these children we meet have Down's Syndrome.
And for the parents of these infants, it's very hurtful that our society still looks at Down's in a negative way.
One of the couples I have got to know were telling me recently about how offensive society's attitude is to them.
