Peggy, Betty and co are back on our screens and this time, Mad Men is all about the 1970s. The most aesthetically pleasing show on TV has taken us through the 60s and now, in its final season, flares, fringing and faux (we presume) sideburns are having a moment.
But those wonder years aren't just making a comeback in the fictional world of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Influences of the decade that gave us The Carpenters, Annie Hall and Wonder Woman have started cropping up everywhere, from interiors to fashion. In fact, a 70s revival was one of the biggest trends on the S/S15 catwalks.
If it's good enough for Joan Harris, it's good enough for us. Here are our favourite key pieces and how to wear them now, without looking like a desperate throwback...
Flares
Nothing says Seventies quite like a bell-bottom. "This is my favourite trend of the moment!" says Brittany Green, stylist and visual merchandiser at Fleur B. "A lighter shade of denim is much more faithful to the era, but darker hues are best for a subtle look." The trouser shape at Giambattista Valli was a much sleeker affair than the traditional flare, so opt for slimmer bottoms and high waists to bring your flare up to date. "Usually best worn with a pointed shoe, preferably a heel to save your flare from dragging on the ground, I do like pairs with a generally wider leginstead of a dramatic flare, as they're much more flattering," adds Brittany.
Crochet
White crochet dresses were seen on the Chloe catwalk, fully reminiscent of the heady days of Woodstock. However, taking this trend into modern day is a tricky one. "Full white or ivory crochet dresses can be difficult to pull off unless you're on holiday in Ibiza," says Brittany. "Instead, go for pieces with cut-outs or overlay rather than all-over crochet." We like this office-friendly shirt and this panel slip dress.
Neck scarf
No longer a style monopoly of air stewards and Queen Elizabeth II, silk scarves are overtaking flatform shoes as the fashion accessory du jour. Saint Laurent and Tommy Hilfiger both chose to adorn their runway models with strips of printed chiffon and they're a way to nod to the 70s trend without going full-on hippie. "When it comes to scarves, veto the high street and head to charity shops or vintage stores instead, as you'll find brightly-coloured one offs at a cheaper price," advises Brittany. "They look great tied loosely around the neck with a leather jacket for a slightly more rock-inspired look, but if that feels a bit too scary, tie them around the handle of your bowling bag instead."
Suede midi skirt
When it comes to this particular piece, there's no time to waste. "M&S have nailed the front-pocket suede skirt this season – both Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung were papped in it during fashion week and fashion editors have been talking about it ever since, counting down to its general release on 14 May." says Brittany. How best to style it if you do manage to get your hands on the coveted skirt? "Layer up your top half to offset the shape – I love a tucked-in chambray or denim shirt – and go for earth tone colours to create a real retro vibe." If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, faux suede works just as well.
