Domaine la Toupie, Maury Sec 2013
Maury is an appellation of the southern French Roussillon region - way down around Carcassonne and Perpignan, and just across the border from Spain. Its fame was built on sweet, red fortified wines made from the Grenache grape in a similar style to the Port wines of Portugal. But fortified wines with their 20% alcohol are somewhat out of favour and more producers are now using the wonderful old vines of the region - in this case 100 years old - to make dry red table wines.
This is a beefy but plush and fruity example of great quality, where haunting creamy raspberry and strawberry notes mix with spice and wild herbs, before a powerful, full palate of smooth fruit that is deep and sweet, with fine chocolaty tannins and acidity.
