A woman has died after being struck by lightning in the Highlands.

Isobel Bytautus was trekking in Na Gruagaichean, near Ben Nevis, on Saturday when the tragic incident occurred.

The 55-year-old, from Selkirk, was among a group of seven walkers - the Linlithgow Ramblers party.

All walkers were airlifted to Fort William but Bytautus succumbed to the injuries she had sustained.

The victim’s daughter Ashley, 30, described her grief on social media: “My mum died instantly, a freak one in a million accident you never think is possible.

“I can’t imagine life without her, I’m lost.”

Another woman who was also hit by lightning is in a stable condition in Belford Hospital, Fort William.

A Coastguard helicopter, Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team and Scotland’s Air Ambulance service all assisted in efforts to rescue the group.

Inspector Isla Campbell said: “We are grateful for the prompt and professional response from partner agencies to this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the lady’s family.”

Police said a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
