A woman gave birth on a New York train after her baby came before she had time to get to the hospital. Rabita Sarkar, 31, told the Associate Press how she and her husband decided to take the Manhattan-bound PATH train as they believed the roads would be busy.

"It was after 9 and we thought the Lincoln tunnel would be very crowded, so if I was in the car and he was driving I would be stuck alone."

However Sarkar soon realised that her baby had other plans, and they wouldn't have time to get a cab to the hospital. Before the train got into Newport Station, she went into labour. Her husband and another woman on the train helped her as she gave birth.

She told AP how she felt having giving birth on the train:

"I was just concentrating on the baby because at that time I realised there was no option the baby had to come. I just had nothing in my mind, I was pretty blank. I just wanted to make sure he was going to be fine and that was it.

"I just kept on asking, is he OK? Is he OK? Because I knew that it was unusual, to say the least."

When the train arrived at the next platform, Sarkar was on the floor and the baby was already born, but police say their primary concern was to keep the baby warm.
