Last Month at CES, Microsoft, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix announced the limited edition Tomb Raider Xbox 360 wireless controller and I was lucky enough to see and play with one.
Developed in collaboration with artists at Crystal Dynamics, the design of the controller features a two-layer colour finish with laser etching to create a realistic and tactile worn appearance. It's inspired by Lara's iconic climbing axe and the tourniquets that result from the adventure in her intense origin story, as told in this latest title.
The controller also features a customisable D-pad that switches from a "plus" design to a "disc" pattern for better control, and a wireless range of up to 30-feet that allows for more freedom in your home environment as you explore and play the game.
In addition, those who purchase the Xbox 360 TOMB RAIDER Limited Edition Wireless Controller, available exclusively at GAME in the UK, will receive a download token for an Xbox 360 exclusive playable character known as the devious Scavenger Archer. The controller will be available timed to the launch of the game worldwide and is priced at £39.99 ERP.
I really liked using the controller - and there is something about using a Tomb Raider controller to play Tomb Raider - I guess you have to just try it for yourself.
These days games publishers rarely just release a AAA title, they have limited or special editions, pre-order bonuses often different depending on which retailed you buy from, and so on. Sometimes these are amazing and if you are fan or a collector then you have to get it, and sometimes they just aren't worth the extra. In the case of the Tomb Raider controller, I believe it's a must have accessory for any Xbox 360 owning Tomb Raider fan. Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix won't comment on what else they will be releasing, or if there will be a PlayStation 3 controller, but there isn't long to wait until Tomb Raider is released on March 5th.
Are you going to buy the controller? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
And don't forget to read my thoughts on both the single player Tomb Raider game and also the multiplayer game.
