Geneticist, mother, grandmother
For her day job, Alex Blakemore is Professor of Human Molecular Genetics at Imperial College London. At home, she’s a besotted mother of four, and grandmother of four. Alex had an unusual route to academic success; after leaving school at 16 and becoming a mum at 19, she later completed her BSc and PhD as a lone parent. Alex is very active in supporting women in science, especially through Athena SWAN activities. She is also very proud to be “Sciencegrrl of the month” for July 2014: http://sciencegrrl.co.uk/unusual-path-stem-career/
Alex writes here in a personal capacity.
