I began my career as a teacher of Humanities in Birmingham secondary schools from 1971 to 1994. I have been active in the trade union movement all my working life, holding a number of lay elected roles within the NASUWT teachers' trade union. In 1998 I joined the staff of the NASUWT and in 2001 was appointed NASUWT Deputy General Secretary and in October 2004 was elected by the whole membership to the position of General Secretary.
