Cornia Pretorius

Journalism Lecturer at North-West University (NWU)

Cornia Pretorius is a journalism lecturer at North-West University (NWU). She has worked as a journalist and researcher as well as a commentator, consultant, content developer, journalist, editor, writer and project manager in the field of education. As a reporter, Cornia Pretorius worked for the dailies Beeld (1995-1998) and ThisDay (2003-2004) and the weeklies Sunday Times (1998-2001) and the Mail & Guardian (2006-2009). Pretorius has won local and international awards for education reporting, including the African Education Journalist of the Year award (English category) presented by the policy dialogue organisation, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). She served on the Association for the Development of Education in Africa’s working group for communication and education for four years to promote the quality of education reporting in Africa. Pretorius also spent six months at Oxford University in Britain as a fellow of the international news agency Reuters. She joined the NWU in 2010. After a break of two years, she joined again last year. She has written a book on the NWU’s merger titled Forging Unity: The story of North-West University’s first 10 years. It was published in December 2017. She is married to the Willem Kempen and they have three daughters.
