Dr Michael Meegan

International Director of ICROSS International and a member of the Department of International Health, Tampere University

Dr Michael Meegan was born in Liverpool and has spent most of his life in rural Africa developing public health programmes. He has worked in Asia and Africa for more than 30 years. He has published widely in international medical research and has written extensively on HIV and AIDS. His books and research are widely cited and he lectures internationally on global health and rights. He has lived in areas of poverty in Asia and Africa his whole professional life and he is the founder of a number of charities. He has been widely recognised for his contribution to global health not least as International Person of the Year 2003 in Ireland and an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine from the National University of Ireland. He has worked with some of the pioneers of tropical health and HIV, Roy Anderson, David Morley and Joe Barnes. His ground breaking work in diarrhoeal disease and solar disinfection, as well as his work in neonatal tetanus and sex workers remain essential. He is currently developing innovative support strategies for sexual minorities and lecturing internationally on rights-based global health. He is the International Director of ICROSS International and a member of the Department of International Health, Tampere University.
