Elaine Miller is a physiotherapist, comedian, mother of three and recovered incontinent. She has just finished a run (badoom tsssh) at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with her show, Gusset Grippers, which has the aim of making you laugh, not leak. Follow her @gussiegrips for regular reminders to #doyerblardyexercises
She has a post-grad in sports medicine. She turned her back on a career of world travel with fit young men after three giant-headed babies broke her bits and triggered a fascination with pelvic floors and the science of continence.
It is her belief that humour can break down the taboo surrounding incontinence - a third of women aged 35-55 wet themselves but few talk about it, never mind seek help, which is a shame as most cases of simple stress incontinence can be cured with pelvic floor exercises.
Elaine uses twitter as a training tool (@gussiegrips, "I tweet, you twitch your twinkle") and is about to take her Fringe Show about pelvic floors to the stage. Which is a foolish thing to do as she knows absolutely nothing about The Arts. It has not occurred to Elaine that there has never been a comedy show about incontinence before because it is simply a terrible idea.
In Gusset Grippers" she talks about what the pelvic floor is, why it goes wrong, how to fix it and why having a good one is smashing. It is evidence based practice disguised as scatological humour, and the only comedy show in Edinburgh which genuinely doesn't want you to pish yourself laughing.
Gusset Grippers currently runs as "incontinence-themed Tupperware parties at women’s homes, combining entertainment with exercise tips" (Chortle) - (www.gussetgrippers.weebly.com) but, her ultimate aim is to change the world, one pelvic floor at a time.
