Historian of Modern Germany, publishing widely on the social, cultural and political history of the twentieth century. Books include Daimler-Benz in the Third Reich (Yale UP, 1998) and Haunted City: Nuremberg and the Nazi Past (Yale UP, 2008), both of which won the Fraenkel Prize for Contemporary History in their respective years, and a short introduction to Hitler's writings entitled How to Read Hitler (Granta, 2014).
