Technology apprentice, Sky
19 year-old Priscilla is a technology apprentice at Sky, working in the Custom Projects department on assignments such as Sky Sports F1 and Sky’s marketing campaigns. She started on the two-year programme just over six months ago, training in Sky’s Software Academy with other apprentices and graduates before moving to her current placement a month ago.
Before applying to Sky, Priscilla attended a sixth form in London, studying for A Levels in ICT, French and Business. She considered applying to university, but decided a more hands-on route was more for her – as well as giving her a foot on the ladder with a major brand (and immediate paid work rather than a hefty student loan!)
Priscilla loves the variety of the job, and working on some of Sky’s most high profile products and programmes. She’s not at all phased about commencing a career in a historically male-dominated industry, and has long since overcome her initial nerves about joining the scheme. She likes the support and camaraderie that come with being part of a formal training scheme, and the social side of working in a big company, such as the summer barbeques and other events.
Prior to the apprenticeship Priscilla only had very basic experience of coding, but found she was among the more experienced trainees on the scheme since it entails training from scratch. She is now working for a Level 3 Diploma in ICT Professional Competence and will complete Level 4 next year. Her ambition is to become a senior software developer within the next 6-7 years, and one day CEO of the company!
