Steven Bode

Director of Film and Video Umbrella

Steven Bode has been Director of Film and Video Umbrella since 1993. In that time, he has commissioned and produced over 200 projects, including high-profile collaborations with many of the most prominent artists working with the moving image, such as Gillian Wearing, Isaac Julien, Jane & Louise Wilson, Tacita Dean and Mark Lewis.

Steven began his career as a film writer, for New Musical Express, The Face, City Limits and numerous other publications, before becoming more closely involved in programming and promoting new forms of film and video and, subsequently producing it. He speaks on a regular basis at a number of public events and continues to write extensively about the visual arts, film and technology. He has edited and contributed to a range of artists' catalogues and other publications, including monographs such as Johan Grimonprez, 'Looking for Alfred', Dryden Goodwin, 'Cast', and collections/anthologies such as 'Waterlog' or 'There is No Road'.

Outside of his projects with Film and Video Umbrella, he curated the large-scale group exhibition, 'There is No Road' for Laboral in Spain, and co-curated 'Airport' for Photographers' Gallery, with Jeremy Millar.
