Troy Martens

Troy Martens began her career as a journalist at the Independent Newspaper group’s Daily News newspaper in Durban and then made the transition to broadcast journalism as an on camera news reporter at eNCA, formerly the eNews Channel. Martens excelled in this field and went on to win a Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award in the TV news category and spent a month in the USA participating in the prestigious CNN Journalism Fellowship at CNN headquarters in Atlanta.   Her desire to serve her country and make a positive contribution to society saw Martens take up the position of Head of Communications at the ANCWL. Her aim was to raise the profile of the historic women’s rights organisation bringing them back into the public discourse and the 21st century. Martens was named one of the country’s most influential youths in the politics category in the Mail & Guardian “Young 200” list in 2012. Working at the Headquarters of the ruling party in Government was an invaluable learning opportunity where she developed an intimate knowledge of the political environment in the country and policy development processes.  Martens is currently the Spokesperson for the Minister of Basic Education. Education is a challenging sector, however, is making giant strides towards the improvement of education in South Africa. Managing Reputations in a sector that everyone has a vested interest in has given me a great opportunity to engage all sorts of people from various areas of society and bring them together with the vision of quality education for South African children. Martens has recently completed a BA Honours in Journalism and Media Studies through the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg part time.
