The UK has recorded 1,200 more Covid-related deaths since Wednesday.

The latest government figures bring the total number of fatalities to 105,571 since the pandemic began. That refers to people who have died within 28 days of first testing positive for coronavirus.

The latest government figures also reveal that 23,275 more people have now tested positive for Covid-19. It brings the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic in the UK to 3,796,088.

The highest number of deaths recorded on a single day was 1,820 on January 20.

That figure, like today’s update, referred to deaths that had been reported in 24 hours rather than deaths that had actually occurred within 24 hours.

Here’s a primer on the main methods of counting Covid deaths and how to interpret them.
