No one is though to have been injured, but local officials have reported flooding and fallen trees. Hundreds of homes were left damaged and vehicles were swept away.

The conditions are a sharp contrast to the 30C that the city – home to 5 million people – had been experiencing.

Civil protection machinery was used to clear the streets.

State governor Enrique Alfaro described the event as incredible, AFP reported.

He added: “Then we ask ourselves if climate change is real. These are never-before-seen natural phenomena.”
