A six-year-old took it upon herself to offer cash and a drink to a homeless man and prompted others to do the same.
The girl’s mother, Kenyatta Lewis from Virginia, US, said they came across the man who was crying as they left a supermarket.
Rather than ignore him, the girl asked her mum why the man was crying, to which Lewis replied: “Maybe he’s just sad.”
Not satisfied, her daughter said she thought he was crying because he was “hot and tired”.
“She walked over to him and said: ‘Hi sir, be happy, it’s a nice day, it’s not raining. Are you hot? Why don’t you go home? The ground is dirty,’” Lewis explained on Facebook.
Lewis said the man told her daughter he had no home, but that he was okay.
“She looked at him with the saddest face and goes: ‘So that means you’re homeless. So you have no food because you have no refrigerator?’
“She gave him a few dollars out of her purse and her drink and said: ‘Please go eat. It would make me happy. I like McDonald’s you should go there’.
“I could tell she made his day.”
Following Lewis’ daughter’s gesture, two more people came up to the man and gave him money, too.
After having a conversation with the man, Lewis found out his trailer had burned down and he had lost everything - including his wife.
“I felt for him,” Lewis wrote. “It just warms my heart. A six-year-old led by example this morning.
“Kids see no colour and that’s exactly how it should be.
“It’s not just a statement saying that the children are our future, it’s a fact. That gives me a little more hope for the world.”
Lewis’ post was shared nearly 80,000 times within one week of being uploaded to Facebook.
“Why am I crying?” one person wrote. “I love this! Your daughter has a beautiful heart!”
