Alex Jones had an emotional moment during Friday’s edition of The One Show, after receiving a surprise video-call from her mum.
The presenter is about to go off on a two-week break to spend time with her family in Wales, who she hasn’t seen since before lockdown restrictions were put in place in March.
During that time, Jones is the only One Show host who hasn’t missed a single episode of the show, and as she prepared to spend some much-deserved time off with her mum, she received a surprise live on air.
“Travel restrictions have been lifted in Wales very soon,” co-presenter Alex Scott began. “And we’ve had a message come in right now from Mary, who’s from somewhere near Swansea, who says she can’t wait to see her daughter, who she hasn’t seen in 16 weeks.
“In fact, she can’t wait any longer, and here she is actually!”
“No! Oh mum!” Jones was heard declaring, as she was treated to the image of her mother’s smiling face on the screen behind her. “Oh it’s only going to be… how many days now? Five?”
“It’s been four very long months,” her mum responded, as they both became tearful.
Scott then told her: “Obviously, Al, you’ve been keeping us all entertained during the whole of lockdown, working so hard to keep smiles on everyone’s faces. And you are going away for two weeks, which is fully deserved.”
“You know what, it’s been a real privilege to come to work every day with all of you lot,” Jones insisted. “And also, thanks for being the reason – as well as my family – for getting me through this really weird time, honestly, it’s been a real honour to be here doing this job.”
While many live TV shows have been forced to make big changes to their set-up due to the coronavirus crisis, The One Show has continued to air every weeknight from its studio, albeit with social distancing restrictions in place.
Presenters are required to remain at least two metres away from one another, while the majority of interviews have been done via video-link.
The One Show has also not had a studio audience since March, when lockdown began in the UK.
