A McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, is getting hit with bad Yelp reviews after the man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was arrested there on Monday.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was detained at the fast-food restaurant after a customer and an employee recognized him while he was eating breakfast and called the police.
Authorities said Mangione had a ghost gun with a suppressor in his possession, along with thousands of dollars of cash, several fake IDs and documents. He was charged Monday evening with carrying firearms without a license, forgery, as well as providing a fake ID to law enforcement.
Although the McDonald’s employee and the customer who identified Mangione helped bring a suspected killer into custody, some people took to Yelp to express their disapproval.
A number of them posted bad reviews of the fast-food restaurant where Mangione was arrested, with one person complaining that it was “Full of snitches,” while another cited “a rat problem.”
Another commenter suggested that the “employees should learn to serve burgers and mind their GODAMN business.”
Yelp has since noted that the McDonald’s in question is being monitored by its support team and has temporarily disabled the posting of reviews “as we work to investigate whether the content you see here reflects actual consumer experiences rather than the recent events.”
The negative reviews for the McDonald’s where Mangione was arrested are just the latest example of what has been an unusual public response to a violent death.
In some cases, people frustrated by their own experiences with health care insurers have reacted to Thompson’s killing with outright glee.
A social media message posted last week by UnitedHealthcare to honor Thompson’s memory was greeted with more than 90,000 laughing emojis.
