Amanda Holden is recovering after breaking her leg whilst on holiday with her family.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge broke her fibula in two places when she lost her footing as she tackled a Total Wipeout-style inflatable assault course in the sea on the first day of her family break.
The star was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation that involved having a metal plate fitted to the broken bone.
The 48-year-old was with her husband Chris and two daughters, Alexa, 13 and Hollie, seven, at the time of the accident.
She said: “Sadly this is true. I suffered a nasty accident while playing in the sea with the family during our half-term holiday and subsequently broke my leg in two places.
“I had an operation on Friday and a metal plate was fitted.”
Despite the surgery, Mandy will be back hosting her Heart FM breakfast show next Monday, albeit with the aid of crutches.
The star called into the show on Tuesday morning to update her co-presenter Jamie Theakston on how she was doing and explain what happened.
“So basically I was trying to be a good mother Jamie,” she said. “I put my book down, I put down the Uno cards… and I said to Hollie ‘Mummy can come on that with you’ and there’s this like, you remember [Total] Wipeout, that TV thing? There’s like a children’s Total Wipeout thing in the middle of the sea and … and I thought yeah I can do that.
“So Hollie was doing brilliantly and going round it. I walked around it and then crawled across like an old person, like across the difficult bits. And then there were these three inflatable stepping stones in the middle of the sea and everyone else was running across it and I thought ‘oh I could do that, if kids can do it I can do it’ and I did it and I made it.
“I was showing off Jamie – I made it across to the other side and then my leg slipped, because obviously its wet, and it went the other way and I felt it break and I fell in to the sea and I had to swim back to the shore one legged.”
She added: “The irony is, you know how much I hate health and safety and a guy that was running the thing said ‘you have to wear the life jacket’ and I was thinking well this is silly, it’s a children’s thing so I was like ‘ugh alright then’ and I put on the life jacket and I’m really glad I did to be honest because I don’t think I would have made it back as hastily as I did.”
Amanda’s not had a lot of luck lately.
Earlier this month she was at the centre of a very public row with a tile company after a mix-up with her order.
The star said she was “so cross” after initially being told she would still have to pay for a delivery of the wrong tiles.
Screengrabs of online messages showed a member of customer service staff named ‘Jack’, stating that they “do not make exceptions for ‘celebrity’ status” and treat all customers the “same”.
After the messages went public, a rep for Appleby Tiles confirmed that Amanda had been “fully refunded within one hour of the issue arising” and also confirmed they had sacked the member of staff in question.
