The most important factor for me being where I am today in terms of being a radio DJ, is definitely that there was a woman doing what I wanted to do, and I didn't realise how much I wanted to do it until I heard that woman and I thought, hang on, she's doing it, maybe I could do it too! And that woman was Mary Anne Hobbs.
She had a show at the time called the Breezeblock, which played all different types of electronic music, everything from disco to drum and bass to big beat. And she to me just seemed like the most passionate and knowledgeable and consequently cool lady I'd ever come across. She didn't talk a lot, maybe every four or five songs, every 10 or 15 minutes. And you really waited for her to talk, and really anticipated what she was going to say. She sounded like she was having so much fun. Listening to her, that was for me the first time it had ever occurred to me that I could have a career specialising in underground music.
Another lady who has inspired me greatly is Sara Cox... in fact there's a lot of women in the radio industry that are just really good friends and have nothing but real respect for each other.
