Aperol Spritz: Perfect Summer Drink Or Pure Trash? Have Your Say

The debate bubbles on.

Aperol Spritz: the marmite of the drinks world. While some can’t get enough of the orange stuff, others (the right people, I would argue) can’t understand how this bitter disgrace of a bevvy has bulldozed its way into fashion.

Those on both sides of the debate have been arguing the merits and flaws or Aperol Spritz after New York Times journalist Rebekah Peppler titled an article: ‘The Aperol Spritz Is Not a Good Drink’.

“Served in branded, jumbo wine glasses, the sugary aperitif is paired with low-quality Prosecco, soda water and an outsize orange slice, resulting in something that drinks like a Capri Sun after soccer practice on a hot day. Not in a good way,” she argued.

A lot of people agreed with Peppler, including culinary goddess Nigella Lawson (who, surely, is not to be argued with).

I agree with @nytimes . Why would anyone have a Tizer-like Aperol Spritz when you could have a Campari Soda or even an Americano? https://t.co/tvJirorxzH

So glad people are finally acknowledging aperol spritz for the absolute shite it is

aperol spritz sucks because it looks like it would taste like fanta and doesn't. 0/10

So this. Can't stand an aperol spritz. Listless, tasteless and mostly alcohol-less. Why bother?

— jenpot (@jenpot) May 9, 2019

Aperol spritz is basically the same as berocca and vodka

But others passionately defended Aperol Spritz. Why, I will never understand.

disagree on the overall reasoning used in the article. If you use poor quality prosecco than you cannot have a good quality cocktail. Aperol Spritz is a lovely aperitivo and have not heard anyone getting sick by drinking it, on the contrary Italians love it immensely

my take on aperol spritzes, since you're all dying to know, is that they're good. i drank a bunch of them when i was in italy, so that's a nice association, and i can also make them in my apartment despite not being able to mix a cocktail to save my life. no downside

I'll give up the espresso martini but you can pry the aperol spritz from my cold, dead hands

Will I now get an Aperol Spritz after work out of spite? Who can say!!!

This might just be the most divisive debate since the EU Referendum.
