You can’t be a doctor and a woman – that’s according to an online form from Barclaycard, which blocked an NHS GP from logging her correct gender and title.
The GP from Leicester, known only as Nikki, posted a screenshot on Twitter showing an error message she received from the company when she put in her title as “Dr”, and her gender as female.
The picture of the form shows a message reading “your gender does not match your title provided, please try again”.
The GP initially accused Barclaycard of sexism, tweeting: “It’s 2019! How come I can’t be both female and a doctor?! #everydaysexism #everydaymisogyny.”
In a later tweet, she said it was likely to be a technical error: “Definitely a glitch,” she wrote. “One of my colleagues has checked and it looks like it’s related to the order you put your title and gender in. I started with ‘Miss’ then went back and changed it to ‘Dr’ in case it helped my application.“
In a statement given to HuffPost UK, a Barclaycard spokesperson confirmed it was a glitch in the system. “We apologise to Nicola for the technical error she encountered when applying for a credit card.
“Applicants are usually able to select ‘Dr’ as their title and then enter their gender as either female or male. We are investigating why this has occurred and will ensure it is corrected.”
Despite that, some people are still saying it isn’t good enough.
