Throughout my time at University, I have been one of those singletons. Yes, I said it. I've admitted it; I'm sure my sponsors at SA (singletons anonymous) would be proud. My sponsors in this situation are clearly my devoted and ever listening best friends and house mates.
Why is it, that in our community, we feel that being single is a punishment, undesirable; and basically means you're a hideous leper? This is what I tell my mother constantly, as more than once a week she asks if I am seeing someone. I am doing well in my course, I'm driven to what I want to do when I graduate, I'm incredibly social and have a really good group of friends; why is this not enough? Why does there have to be something wrong with me to explain why I haven't got someone sucking all of the life out of me?
Being in a relationship is literally splashed all over the media. In adverts, campaigns in magazines and in every single film you watch - even if it's a terrifying horror, the guy always ends up with the pretty girl next door. WHAT IS THIS? Where did this Utopian idealism come from?
Obviously, I'm not naive and I'm not making up for my short comings. In our human nature, we are supposed to find someone to mate with and procreate. Well, I have a little news flash, I'm 20 and not even a graduate yet, I do not want to procreate yet... if ever. Literally I would rather be hit by one of those massive double-decker buses... and I hate buses.
But why is this expectation pushed upon us from the day we start menstruating? I know plenty of pretty, intelligent girls who are single. One of which, who I might add, is one of the prettiest girls I know; she made it her New Year's resolution 'to find a boyfriend'. Though I pity her, in the same respect I want to slap her and tell her to get a bloody grip. She doesn't need some man-child to define who she is.
Now I sound like a bra-burning feminist. Trust me, I'm not. All I want to state is that if you are single, then that is fine! You literally have the rest of your life to find that someone, OUT of Plymouth (the pickings are literally so slim in this godforsaken city).
Me - though yes, it would be nice to have someone to be there for you and to tell you, you look good and give you some love. I'm pretty happy with the current relationships I am in and if it happens, then it happens. If it doesn't... then there are plenty of other fish in the sea.
If all you single girls realise this, then everything will be fine.
Terminally single? I've just been given the all clear, I'm single and everything is good.
