Cardi B has spoken out after a transphobic meme was posted on her Facebook page.
Over the weekend, the ‘Bartier Cardi’ rapper’s fans were alarmed when a meme was posted on her verified social media account, which contained a transphobic slur.
Responding to the controversy, Cardi has now insisted that it was a “former team member” who posted the meme, which has now been taken down.
She posted on Twitter: “It’s come to my attention there have been offensive posts made on what used to be my Facebook page.
“For the past year and a half a FORMER team member has been the only one with access to the account.”
Earlier this year, Cardi apologised for her own historic use of transphobic slurs, insisting during a live stream: “I didn’t know that was a word that you cannot use, especially because my trans friends use it and growing up, my parents never told me that that was a bad word.
“You know, there’s bad words that your parents teach you that you’re not supposed to say. Nobody taught us that. Nobody taught us that in our school.”
Cardi apologised for this again when she was caught up in the controversy surrounding Rita Ora’s single, ‘Girls’, on which she is a featured artist.
When some suggested the track played up to harmful stereotypes about bisexual people and “fuelled the male gaze”, Cardi said: “I personally myself had experiences with other woman, shiieeett with a lot of [women]! I [thought] the song was a good song and i remember my experience.
“I know I have used words before that I wasn’t aware that they are offensive to the LGBT community. I apologise for that. I know I have used words before that I wasn’t aware that they are offensive to the LGBT community. I apologise for that.”
