Filming on Coronation Street was disrupted last week when an actor tested positive for coronavirus.

The Guardian reported that one of the stars of the ITV soap discovered they had the virus at the end of last week, causing a number of alternations to the production schedule.

An ITV spokesperson told the paper: “We can confirm a member of the Coronation Street team has tested positive for coronavirus. The protocols we have in place for such an eventuality have been implemented and the individual is now self-isolating at home.”

They added that ITV did not believe anyone had been within a two-metre distance of the actor, but those who had been working with them had been notified.

An intensive clean of the areas where the actor was working at Coronation Street’s studios in Salford, Manchester, had also been conducted.

“We believe the situation has been contained and filming continued on Monday,” the spokesperson added.

Coronation Street was the second of the four major UK soaps to resume filming after production was shut down due to the pandemic in March.

Actors returned to set in early June – shortly after those on fellow ITV soap Emmerdale – with strict new social distancing measures in place, and various production techniques used to overcome this on screen.

The soap also managed to stay on air during lockdown after ITV reduced the number of pre-recorded episodes airing each week.

BBC rival EastEnders was off air for three months before returning to screens with new episodes earlier this month.
