More than one million people around the world have now died as a result of Covid-19, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University
As of around 1.30am UK time on Tuesday, the global death toll stood at 1,000,000.
More than 33 million people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the virus first emerged in China late last year.
The true death toll and number of cases is likely to be considerably higher than recorded, with many people infected with the virus having gone untested – especially at the start of the pandemic.
The US has reported a total of 204,756 deaths from Covid-19 – more than any other country in the world.
Brazil has the second-highest death toll, where 141,471 people have died after contracting the virus, followed by India and Mexico.
The UK has the fifth highest death count, with 42,077 people having died of coronavirus.
The landmark death toll comes amid a new surge in Covid-19 cases in the UK, where around 17 million people are under local lockdown restrictions.
On Sunday, the country recorded 5,693 new cases of coronavirus and 17 deaths.
